Jews of Spain, past and present
One of Davi’s friends, Scott Rubin from the multicultural Jewish Think Tank B’chol Lashon will be giving a presentation about the Jews of Spain, Scott has been working closely with the anusim (the descendants of Spanish and Portuguese Jews forced to convert to Christianity by the Inquisition) to help them return to Judaism. Scott will also talk about the recent archeological discovery of a synagogue (dated in the1400’s) in Lorca, Murcia region of Spain.
Scott Rubin is a senior research associate at the Institute for Jewish & Community Research. He is the manager of the initiative on anti-Israelism and anti-Semitism in America's primary and secondary educational systems. He is currently completing The Twisted Textbook (Fall, 2007), the next volume in the Institute’s series, Politics and Propaganda in American Education. He is a co-author, along with Diane Tobin and Gary Tobin, of In Every Tongue: The Racial and Ethnic Diversity of the Jewish People. He also works closely with the anusim (the descendants of Spanish and Portuguese Jews forced to convert to Christianity by the Inquisition) to help them return to Judaism.
Mr. Rubin holds an A.B., magna cum laude, in comparative literature from Harvard University, and an M.A. from The Writing Seminars at The Johns Hopkins University. After graduation, Mr. Rubin lived in Madrid, Spain, where he founded Grupo Perla, a cross-cultural communications consulting firm. He has been an interpreter for the U.S. Department of Justice, the Royal Navy of Spain, and many multinational corporations. He has also been freelance writer specializing in politics and culture. His writing has appeared in many publications. Prior to joining the Institute, Mr. Rubin was a senior consultant for QBInternational, a management and leadership consulting firm.
Scott is fluent in Spanish and conversant in several other languages. He lives in San Francisco with his partner, Stephen, and their six-year-old son, Zeke, and two-year-old daughter, Stella.
