Nate Looney, Rabbi Erwin & Agnes Herman Humanitarian Award Honoree
Nate Looney is Jewish Federations of North America’s Director of Community Safety and Belonging on the Jewish Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (“JEDI”) Team. He is an American Jewish University alum, social entrepreneur, diversity strategist, US Army Veteran, and Urban Farmer.

Nate joined the US Army National Guard in 2003. After boot camp, Nate relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana where he was a military police soldier. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck and Nate became a vital part of rescue efforts and earned the Army’s Meritorious Service Medal. As the region recovered from the devastation, Nate worked
alongside the New Orleans Police Department and was part of Task Force Gator. In 2008, he deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Nate decided to leave the military to finish his college education and begin his gender transition.
In 2015, Nate graduated from American Jewish University with his B.A. in Business. The day after graduating, he filed the L.L.C. for Westside Urban Gardens, a hydroponic and aquaponic agricultural enterprise. He graduated from the Veterans to Farmers Controlled Environment Agriculture Course and interned at Ouroboros Aquaponic Farms in Half Moon Bay, California.
After the murder of George Floyd, Nate shifted his attention from agriculture to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Jewish community. Applying his start-up mindset to the social justice issues of the time, he worked to create innovative solutions to build community for Jews holding marginalized identities. As the Manager of Racial Justice at
Avodah, Nate developed and launched the JOC Bayit, a social justice cohort with a residential component, in Brooklyn, New York. Currently, Nate enlists his multidisciplinary experience to effect change in safety and security, antisemitism, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and community building.
Nate is a Jeremiah Fellow, and an alum of several Jewish leadership programs, including Bend the Arc Selah and A Wider Bridge. He is also a Wexner Field Fellow and serves as a board member at Jewtina y Co, A Wider Bridge, and JQ International. Nate is passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion both in North America and internationally.
In his free time, Nate enjoys creating international wellness experiences for people of color and most recently led a men’s resilience convening in Tulum, Mexico.

Jenny Pizer, Harriet Perl Tzedek Award Honoree
Jenny C. Pizer is Chief Legal Officer for Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest legal organization working to achieve full civil rights for LGBTQ people and people living with HIV in the United States.

She leads Lambda Legal’s nationwide team of 44 legal professionals who litigate impact cases, develop and advocate for policy reforms, and conduct public education. Since joining Lambda Legal’s staff in 1996, Jenny has been a leading national voice for ending discrimination against LGBTQ people in employment, education, health care, and family law including marriage, and against the use of religion and free speech rights to license discrimination. She has been honored to represent same-sex couples, parents, and LGBTQ individuals in cases seeking equal family recognition, remedies for discrimination, and asylum due to anti-LGBTQ persecution in other countries. She has taught law school courses, given presentations for the U.S. State Department, and advised those seeking protections for LGBTQ people in other countries. She also currently serves on the board of Outright International, which advances LGBTIQ human rights globally through research, movement resourcing, and United Nations advocacy. Jenny has received many professional achievement and community leadership awards, including been recognized as among California’s top women lawyers seven times. She has her B.A. from Harvard College and J.D. from the NYU School of Law.
