Book Talk: The Wanderers by Daniela Gerson

Please join us at Beth Chayim Chadashim on October 18, 2026, for a discussion with Daniela Gerson on her recently published book The Wanderers. This groundbreaking narrative story recounts the story of the families of both Daniela and her wife, Talia Inlender, uncovering the details of their grandparents’ lives after they fled the Polish town of Zamosc.

The two families, who were not acquainted, survived the Holocaust by escaping to the Soviet Union and were at first imprisoned in Soviet Gulag camps. Both families went on to spend years looking for a safe haven as they were forced to move from locale to locale. Their divergent paths across generations eventually allowed Daniela and Talia to meet in Los Angeles.

With dramatic flair, a detective’s attention to detail, and historical insight, Daniela’s engaging and enlightening book not only tells this lesser-known story of Polish Jews’ Holocaust survival in the face of extreme hardship, but also relates an endearing love story about Daniela falling in love with Talia, who becomes her future wife.

The Wanderers is both a deeply personal book and a revelatory addition to Holocaust literature in general.
